- 1Equipment telemetry — state of charge, power, temperature, faults.
- 2Half-hourly electricity readings for the connection.
- 3Contact details, only for people who register or ask a question.
- 4Not collected — appliance-level detail, occupancy inference, or profiling.
What is collected, what it is used for, and what is not collected.
01
Why the data is needed at all
Control decisions depend on knowing how much charge is available and what the site is drawing. Evaluation depends on being able to compare periods honestly. Support depends on being able to see whether a unit is faulty. Each category of data should map to one of those purposes, and anything that does not map to a purpose should not be collected.
02
Half-hourly readings and what they can reveal
Half-hourly consumption data is not appliance-level data, but at fine granularity, consumption patterns can indicate when a property is occupied. That is why access should be limited, why data should be aggregated for reporting, and why retention periods should be short and stated.
03
What we deliberately do not do
Kettle does not collect health, vulnerability, payment or account information through campaign pages, and does not build behavioural profiles of households. Where a resident needs support that involves sensitive information, that conversation belongs with the housing provider or the relevant supplier, through their own secure processes.
04
Your rights
UK data protection law gives you rights to access the personal data held about you, to have inaccurate data corrected, and to object to certain processing. Our privacy notice sets out how to exercise them and who is responsible when Kettle and a housing association are both involved.
For residents
Ask for a plain-English list of what is collected, who can see it, how long it is kept and how to make a request. You should get one before anything is installed.
For housing providers
Controller and processor roles between Kettle and the housing association must be agreed in writing, with a data protection impact assessment covering half-hourly consumption data.
